Happy New Year!

This past season the Whitman Girls Soccer team won a 4th state championship in a row! It is the team's 7th state championship and the 6th for Coach Herbert. The Vikings went undefeated in the regular season for only the second time in the team's history! On their road to states the Vikings beat rival Churchill 6-2 before playing the #2 seed in the county Quince Orchard. In a game that was and instant classic, the Vikings won the regional championship in a 2-1 victory. As the playoffs continued, Whitman went on to play in a rematch of last year's state championship game compet against fellow MCPS school, Blair. Whitman was able to secure a 1-0 victory and moved on to the state semi-finals against Leonardtown, a team they never played before. Late in the game, Ava Anderson burst through the Leonardtown defense for a 1v1 against the keeper and she calmly slipped the ball into the back in the net securing another 1-0 victory for the Vikings. In the state championship game the Vikings squared off against another never played before opponent, Crofton. The Vikings had the better run of play in the first half but couldn't find a goal as the Crofton defense stood strong. In a feeling of deja vu the Vikings were struck with another tough blow. Last year in the state final the Vikings lost their starting goalkeeper to a red card. This year, the Vikings lost All-State defender and All-Met Player of the year, Sascha Beasley, at halftime due to a broken nose and concussion she received in the waning seconds of the first half. The team reorganized and seemed energized by the new challenge. They dominated possession and created countless scoring opportunities but couldn't seem to find the back of the net until junior All-Region player, Kennedy Eva-Buckner scored off a cross from senior All-Met player Evelyn Javers to give the Vikings the lead 1-0. Shortly after, Javers found the ball at her feet again, this time inside the 18 and calmly slotted it into the corner, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Minutes later Javers again had the ball at her feet but out on the right flank this time, about 40 yards away from the goal. Javers beat several defenders on the dribble raced down the touchline and deposited the ball again into the back of the net after faking a centering pass to oncoming teammates in the box. The Vikings held on for the last minutes of the game won 3-0 finishing the season with a 17-0 record, the second undefeated season in the team's history. In the end of season national rankings Whitman ended up being ranked inside the Top 20! This is the second time the team has been ranked that high in the program's history (the team was ranked #9 in 2014).

We can't wait to take the field in the Fall of 2025 and hope to see you all pack the stands as the team looks to secure their 4th state title in a row!
